The female flower of the hop plant, Humulus lupulus, is what we call a hop. They are utilized in brewing as a natural preservative as well as to enhance the flavor and aroma of beer. The bitterness of the hops helps to counteract the sweetness of the malt and contributes to a more complex, full-bodied flavor profile. Additionally, they have antimicrobial qualities that aid in preventing spoiling. Hops are available in a wide range of types, each having unique qualities and flavors. The quantity and kind of hops used can have a significant impact on the final flavor and character of the beer. Hops are normally added to the boil during the brewing process.

Here’s a list of hops used in brewing beer:

Hop Trends 2023:

In 2023, the craft beer industry is witnessing a revolutionary shift with the introduction of new hop varieties, transforming the way we perceive the craft beer and homebrewing landscape. Homebrewers and craft beer enthusiasts alike now have access to a broader palette of flavors, bringing a new level of complexity and uniqueness to their brews.

The craft beer industry is being transformed by the introduction of these new hop varieties, never before seen in the market. Brewers now have the freedom to experiment with different combinations of hops, creating unique flavor profiles that will tantalize the taste buds of craft beer drinkers. This hop revolution is also ushering in a new era of beer styles, with brewers creating beers that are more hop-forward than ever before, with intense hop aromas and flavors that make them stand out from the crowd.

In parallel with the craft beer industry, the homebrewing community is also reaping the benefits of this hop revolution. After years of lobbying, the government has finally increased the number of hops available to homebrewers. This means that homebrewers can now experiment with a wider variety of hops, creating beers that are more complex, interesting, and flavorful. The addition of more hops allows homebrewers to make beers that are more balanced and drinkable, and more in line with the popular craft beers that are trending today. Furthermore, this development also makes homebrewing more affordable and accessible to the average person, bringing the joy of brewing to everyone.

One of the exciting new hop varieties that made its debut in 2023 is the McKenzie hop. Developed by West Coast Hop Breeding, a network of six Oregon hop farmers, this new hop variety was bred over a five-year process. McKenzie is described as a “bright and fruity” hop with aromas of grapefruit, lemon, nectarine, and melon, backed by pine, resin, and wood. This unique flavor profile promises to bring a new level of complexity to craft beers and homebrews alike.

The hop industry in Australia is also making strides in developing new hop varieties. Traditionally dominated by bitter varieties, the Australian hop industry has shifted its focus due to the growing popularity of craft brews and the demand for distinctive aromatic tastes. This has allowed them to work with both mainstream breweries and the craft sector in developing new varieties. Australian hop farmers have also seen an influx of craft brewers from countries including India, Japan, Europe, and the USA, keen on sourcing unique hop varieties to give their brews a distinctive flavor profile and a marketing edge.

One notable Australian hop variety that continues its strong use in IPAs is Galaxy, an Australian-bred hop derived from a German variety, which has attracted attention from US craft brewers. Another variety is Topaz, which produces a beer with tones of lychee and tropical fruit. These unique flavors promise to add a new dimension to the craft beer and homebrewing scene, offering brewers a broader palette of flavors to experiment with.

While the introduction of these new hop varieties is indeed exciting, there is still more to be discovered. The brewing industry is constantly evolving, and as such, the search for new hop varieties continues. This will undoubtedly lead to the creation of even more unique and flavorful beers in the future.

The 2023 trends have been significant this year for the craft beer and homebrewing community, with new hop varieties offering a wider range of flavors and aromas.
